ICT and Butterflies
Using ICT to enhance Teaching and Learning throughout a Project based on Butterflies.
Communication Language and Literacy
- Multi-link cassette player to enable children to listen as a group to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.
- Video of Children re-telling story in the Puppet Theatre to be used at story time.
- Talking Books-animation of “Hungry Caterpillar” and children’s own stories about caterpillars.
- CCTV- reading story on one tv to children watching on another
- Outdoor/Physical Development
- Looking at mini-beasts found in the nursery environment using digital microscope and laptop.
- Remote control car-driven around shape of caterpillar
- Using metal detector to find caterpillars cocoons and butterflies.
- Walkie-Talkies - Children dressed in butterfly wings “flying” to different places as directed by an adult.
Creative
- Collecting various coloured petals, leaves etc from nursery garden, sticking onto 2 sided card, scanning card and using as a colour palette when painting butterflies.
- Karaoke- Children perform our caterpillar songs to an audience.
- Listening to taped music and distinguishing/deciding which best suits the movements of a caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly. Adding own instrumental accompaniment.
- Smart-Board – Paint programmes to enable children to draw own butterfly.
Mathematics
- Pixie- move programmable toy along number line to collect caterpillars, cocoons, butterflies.
- Computer screen- symmetry.
- Metal detector- finding pieces of puzzle to make a number caterpillar 1-10.
- “Caterpillar Café” Scanned menus, digital scales, electronic till, battery operated microwave and kettle etc. Using lap top for taking orders. Calculators. Working telephones to link the home corner to the takeaway café.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Map making- Negotiate pathways to collect various items of food, using programmable toy.
- Pixie- Moving along line to taste food eaten by the hungry caterpillar.
- Web cam footage of butterfly emerging from the cocoon.
- Digital images of our caterpillars at various stages of metamorphosis-made into a lotto game.
- Digital Blue Movie Maker – Children made own short video clip of the release of our butterflies.
- Web cam footage of butterfly emerging from the cocoon.
Personal Social and Emotional Development
- Experiencing “awe and wonder” during the growing and releasing of the butterflies, through taking of digital images, web cam and video footage.
- Sharing the above process with parents on the interactive white board.
- Helping parents to access internet to find out more about butterflies.
- Production of information sheet about the life-cycle of a butterfly made by the children for their families using digital images and text.
